Paul Hester, the drummer from Crowded House, has hung himself in a Melbourne park. It seems just like it did when Hunter exited, shocking and such a waste... but I sense Paul was in a lot of anguish about something whereas Hunter made a decision to go out like that as a form of self control. Does that make sense? Well, as much sense as something so senseless can?
For those who don't know, Paul was one of the funniest guys you could ever see on a stage. He grew up in Paremata and worked at Bright's Building Supplies. He also memorably suffered from The Farts onstage at the Wellington Town Hall the last time I saw Crowded House, which would have been the Temple of Low Men tour, when I was something like 14 or 15... Kind of summed up his humour, he could admit to having the farts in front of 10,000 people and suddenly you felt like you were all friends. Just a magic guy. So sad he decided to leave...
