Plump Plum

Michael Crowe (whose other blog, Fig Crumbs is a trove of interesting writing) has an eclectic art blog called Plump Plum - but unfortunately he doesn't name the artists he posts works of so I'm a bit lost.  I've decided to post a few pictures a) because I haven't for a while and b) because maybe someone can leave a comment with the name of the artists if they know them.  Thanks.

I know that last one is a postcard, that's just to make it a bit more difficult.  There is actually a prize, you see.  Unfortunately I can't reveal what it is at this stage...

Sweetcorn

As a child I wanted to be a car stereo.
My parents encouraged me.
They let me sit in the car at night.
Hours, shivering, smiling.
I would ease my fingers inside the cassette deck and just sit there.
I was willing myself on but nothing happened.
To me, anything was possible, it was simply a question of desire.
I thought that perhaps I wasn’t sufficiently motivated.
At twelve, I wedged myself into the idea that I would become a staple gun.
My two front teeth hung bunny low.
My mother told me that the world already had staple guns.
She said many staple guns were unsold and unloved.
The same thing applied to car stereos, but that never seemed to bother her.
I bit into two sheets of paper at every opportunity.
To my surprise, staples would occasionally fire out.
They never quite held anything together though.
The staples remained half open.
I blamed my bottom set of teeth.
They told me that they worked fine.
They added that it was the top set that was slightly off centre.
A scuffle broke out.
I lost some teeth.
I found some teeth.
They didn‘t fit in my mouth.
I threw them away.
Years later I thought I’d found them.
I hadn’t.

Survive Style 5+

Survive Style 5+, five intersecting stories about people in crisis, is a sumptuous and refreshing film. Its director and editor, Gen Sekiguchi, fashions the attitude, polish and instant laughs of Japanese commercials into an awesome feature debut. This is avant-garde lite: jarring, yet with an accessible pop sensibility.

Tadanobu Asano 浅野忠信 is brilliantly understated as a man who can't get rid of his wife (Reika Hashimoto 橋本麗香), while Kyōko Koizumi's 小泉今日子 advertising executive suavely puts down her aspirin-manufacturer client (Sonny Chiba 千葉真一). This scene is a must-see for anyone who's ever worked on commercials. Vinnie Jones basically rehashes his Snatch hit-man role, except that here he conducts existential interviews with his victims. But to reduce this film to plot and character would be to betray the essentially graphic nature of the experience. (Official site.)

WHEN THINGS DREAM, a garage installation by Lewis Koch

If you happen to be passing through Madison, Wisconsin, you might want to swing by the garage of 2661 East Johnson Street (just east of North Street).  Lewis Koch is having an exhibition there until June 25th.  (I love the idea of exhibiting in a garage - garages are fantastic.  Even better than carparks.)

"The current edition of the Garage Trilogy presents text-based artwork within the confines of a simple wood frame one-car garage, without the car.  Included in When Things Dream are a silent soundtrack/videopoem, a glass head, a jigsaw puzzle, a 38-foot photographic frieze and other new color work, artist-made bumperstickers, handstamped leaves, a hand towel, various found objects and the usual suspects of detritus normally residing in the garage space."
